Introducing….DOTS by Mariko. It’s my first official foray into functional pottery. Mainly mugs and espresso cups, but also bowls and some other things for snacks. And the theme is all dots! Here are some quick notes about the collection, followed by details about when + where these pieces will be available.
It all began with a chat about making coffee mugs to sell at da Shop. Since I've never done functional stoneware like this for sale, my plan was to go for it and learn along the way. So this collection is kind of like a record of my time getting the hang of making multiples, finding a theme that worked, and then running with all the new ideas that came out of it.
Ever since I started working with stoneware, I have loved using the clay itself as a design element. All these dots are naked clay, created by painting them with a wax-resist and dipping in a single glaze. The wave + sun (or moon) design was the first design that I connected with. It felt like a cousin to Beachcake (my other brand of ceramics), and I liked seeing how it worked across different shapes.
Then, all these variations I needed to try: the allover dots, a straight-sided mug asked for big oblong dots, some plain dipped pieces for breathing room... I hope people have fun mixing and matching all the different designs.
